Honor comes from humility before Allah
“Let me understand the other person's perspective.”
True honor and dignity come from humility before Allah, expressed through simplicity, service, patient listening, and following the Prophet's character rather than seeking status or recognition.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Defines humility as lowering the ego and recognizing one's servant relationship with Allah.
- Explains the promised reward for those who reject pride, authority, and corruption.
- Uses the Prophet's simple living and contentment as an example of humility.
- Shows humility through patience with a grieving woman and service within the household and community.
- Connects loving and following the Prophet with embodying his character, not merely practicing rituals or maintaining outward appearances.
- Presents four practices: conscious dependence on Allah, hidden service, attentive listening, and remembering human origin and return.
- Concludes with prayers for humility, forgiveness, the sick and deceased, and suffering communities.
In the khateeb's words
“That the world does not revolve around me and my opinions. That I am not the most important person in the room.”
“When he was at home. He would be in the service of his family. But when it was time to come to serve the community. He was in service of the community as well.”
“Perhaps I'm wrong. Perhaps I'm mistaken. Let me understand the other person's perspective. Maybe I can learn something.”
“We are all born from an insignificant drop. And our end is going to be dust in a grave. And we're going to return to Allah.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that true honor is not fame, praise, or being in charge; it is humility before Allah. The Prophet modeled this by living simply, responding patiently to a grieving woman, helping at home, and serving the community. We are encouraged to follow that character, not only outward religious practices. This week, we can depend consciously on Allah, do good quietly, listen to understand during conflict, and remember that we came from a drop, will return to Allah, and must not belittle others. The khutbah closed with prayers for forgiveness, the sick and deceased, and relief for people suffering in Gaza.
- Where could we practice quiet service this week without telling anyone?
- What does listening to understand look like during a disagreement?
- How can remembering Allah change the way we treat someone we think is less important?
