Put others before your own desires
“The person who is able to fight off the cheapness of himself is the true successful individual.”
Islam requires believers to fight selfish individualism by purifying the heart and prioritizing the rights and welfare of others through generosity, service, and self-restraint.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Begins with taqwa, upright speech, and placing community benefit before personal desires.
- Defines individualism and selfishness as spiritual diseases, then introduces tazkiyah and its three-part framework.
- Explains the rights of believers, parents, spouses, relatives, and neighbors.
- Uses prophetic teachings to emphasize sharing, helping others, relieving hardship, and controlling anger.
- Uses the Muhajirun and Ansar as examples of selflessness and overcoming stinginess.
- Closes with Abu Bakr’s generosity at Tabuk and a call to become generous, useful people.
In the khateeb's words
“a selfish person is a person who idolizes himself and he puts himself first before everything else”
“the believer is someone who shares and the believer is someone who cares and the believer is someone who puts someone else before their own selves”
“the most beloved action to God is not an act of worship subhanallah it's sururun yadkhiluhu ala muslim it's making another muslim happy uplifting another muslim spirit”
“the person who is able to fight off the cheapness of himself is the true successful individual”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that Islam asks us to fight selfishness and care about the people around us. Purifying the heart means leaving harmful habits, building good character, and honoring the rights of believers, parents, spouses, relatives, and neighbors. The Prophet’s teachings show that sharing, helping someone through hardship, easing a debt, feeding the hungry, and controlling anger are deeply beloved to Allah. The Muhajirun and Ansar modeled generosity by preferring others even when they had little. This week, we can choose one person to help, give without resentment, and ask Allah to make us more generous and useful.
- When did someone help you recently, and how could you pass that kindness on?
- What is one selfish habit you could replace with a generous habit?
- How can our family make someone’s difficulty easier this week?
