Good character is part of true success
“To build a better character, always simplify things and not have bad intentions about people.”
True spiritual success requires both ritual worship and good character, because harming others can nullify one's apparent religious achievements.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The hadith of the bankrupt defines spiritual loss as harming people despite abundant worship.
- Good character is a divine command, a purpose of the Prophet's mission, and a necessary complement to ritual practice.
- The speaker describes good character through truthfulness, restraint, patience, gratitude, mercy, generosity, kinship, and avoiding gossip, envy, and abuse.
- He explains that good character brings complete faith, Allah's love, heavy scales, entry into Paradise, and closeness to the Prophet.
- He recommends supplication, righteous companionship, studying the Prophet's life, and following his example.
- Stories of early Muslims illustrate responding to insults calmly, simplifying others' words, and refusing to spread rumors.
In the khateeb's words
“religion is not only ritualistic aspects it's not just praying and fasting and all that it has to be the characters”
“so one should be careful what he says and practice this forgotten sunnah of to be quiet or to contemplate and not talk as much”
“my takeaway from you guys from this khutbah is go look up one of his du'a's and memorize it inshallah and add it to your du'a's”
“to build a better character always simplify things and not have bad intentions about people”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that being a good Muslim is not only about prayer, fasting, and charity; it also means treating people well. The Prophet described the truly bankrupt person as someone whose worship is outweighed by insults, harm, and injustice toward others. Good character includes truthful speech, patience, mercy, gratitude, generosity, quietness, and avoiding gossip, curses, envy, and backbiting. We can grow by asking Allah for better character, choosing companions who bring us closer to Him, studying the Prophet's life, and following bad deeds with good ones. Small choices, especially how we speak and respond when annoyed, can make our faith stronger and our deeds heavier on the Day of Judgment.
- What does being spiritually rich or bankrupt mean beyond having money?
- When is staying quiet the kindest choice?
- How can we respond when someone insults us or brings us gossip?
