Ramadan's purity must shape our wealth
“When you earn what you deserve, Allah put a blessing on it.”
The purification cultivated by Ramadan must extend to lawful earning, honest financial dealings, and charitable spending, because wealth is part of faith and can affect whether worship is accepted.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces the Quran's structural link between Ramadan fasting and the prohibition of unjustly consuming wealth.
- Explains fasting as purification that must include income and money.
- Argues that lawful earning, charity, and spending reveal and strengthen iman.
- Uses an anecdote attributed to Imam Hanifa to show that deserved income can carry blessing.
- Urges listeners to correct financial injustice, fulfill Allah's and the poor's rights, and maximize zakah and sadaqah.
- Closes with repentance, blessings on the Prophet, and prayers for Muslims and guidance.
In the khateeb's words
“And as you purify your heart You purify Yourself Your life You have to purify your money You have to earn Only and solely from halal”
“When you earn What you deserve Allah put a blessing On it”
For the dinner table
The khateeb explained that the Quran’s discussion of fasting is closely connected to the command not to consume wealth unjustly. Ramadan purifies the heart, but that purification should also reach our income, spending, and treatment of other people. We should seek halal earnings, remember that wealth is a gift from Allah, and give others their rightful share through zakah and charity. The way we handle money is part of our iman, and wronging people can put our good deeds at risk. May Allah purify our hearts, lives, and wealth and bless what is halal for us.
- What is one way we can be more careful that our money is halal?
- How can our family share wealth or give charity in Allah’s way?
- What does it look like to make things right when we have wronged someone?
