Faith is proved by how we live
“We need to understand who we are as Muslims and we need to pass on this deen of ours, this beautiful deen of ours to the next generation.”
True iman is shown through obedience and character, so Muslims must prioritize their own and their children's religious preparation for the Hereafter alongside worldly success.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Frames the khutbah around reconnecting with Allah and the deen before Ramadan.
- Explains al-A'raab as distant desert dwellers whose claim of iman was corrected because iman had not entered their hearts.
- Applies this distinction to Muslims who neglect prayer, fasting, zakah, family, neighbor, and workplace duties while assuming verbal faith guarantees Jannah.
- Reminds listeners of death, resurrection, and accountability for every deed.
- Challenges parents to balance worldly ambitions with teaching children wudu, salah, Quran recitation, and deen.
- Closes by urging preparation for the next generation and inviting families to a Ramadan halaqah.
In the khateeb's words
“every action that I take in this world, I will have to stand before Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and answer for every single deed that I have done in this world.”
“But how is it fair that we're willing to sacrifice their deen for their dunya?”
“A person who's sleeping on a $5,000 mattress will end up in the same grave. And a person who's sleeping on a floor will end up in the same grave.”
“We need to understand what our values are. We need to understand who we are as Muslims and we need to pass on this deen of ours, this beautiful deen of ours to the next generation”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that saying we have faith is not enough if faith does not shape our actions. Our prayers, fasting, honesty, kindness, and treatment of family and neighbors should show what we believe. He especially urged parents to prepare children for the Hereafter, not only for school, careers, and material success. Every person will stand before Allah and answer for their deeds. As Ramadan approaches, we should make time for worship and help the next generation understand and live Islam.
- What is one way we can make room for salah this week?
- What should our family learn or practice before Ramadan?
- What matters more after this life: our things or our deeds, and why?
