Follow the Prophet through hardship

“Every time you question if this is right or wrong or am I doing it the correct way?”

The khateeb, at 24:31

In one sentence

In times of hardship, Muslims should follow the Prophet Muhammad's example in every sphere, grounding hope, justice, and steadiness in Allah's remembrance and Sunnah.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Medina is still grieving Uhud when news arrives that the Mushrikun are returning.
  2. Uswatun hasanah means making the Prophet's teachings a foundation for conduct in family, work, school, business, and relationships.
  3. Hardship tests whether that foundation is stable, so believers should anchor activism, encounters with racism, and personal trials in hope of Allah's pleasure and the Hereafter.
  4. Dhikr includes pausing before reacting and remembering that Allah hears and sees you.
  5. Fatima's hardship and the Prophet's 33/33/34 instruction illustrate finding strength through remembrance, followed by supplication.

For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah reminded us that the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, gives us an example to follow when life feels difficult. The khateeb described the people of Madinah facing another threat while still recovering from the pain of Uhud. He urged us to bring the Prophet’s teachings into our everyday choices, including how we speak, learn, work, and treat our families. Like strong pillars holding up a building, that example can help us remain steady when problems pile up. He also reminded us to seek Allah’s pleasure and remember Him regularly, including by pausing to think about Him before we speak or react.

  1. What is one way you could follow the Prophet’s example at school or at home tomorrow?
  2. When could remembering Allah help you choose kinder words?
  3. What helps you keep doing something good when nobody seems to notice?
