True freedom comes through serving Allah

“My Lord is with me and my Lord will guide me through this.”

The khateeb, at 27:31

In one sentence

True freedom comes from servitude to Allah, which enables believers to resist oppression, examine their own conduct, support the oppressed, and remain steadfast like Musa.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Muharram and Ashura renew faith and connect believers to Musa's legacy of justice and courage.
  2. The story of Musa reframes freedom as liberation of the heart through worship and servitude to Allah.
  3. Believers must identify both external oppressors and Fir'aun-like domination within their own relationships and communities.
  4. The Qur'anic story teaches that Allah supports the oppressed and raises those who endure hardship.
  5. Muslims should live their faith openly, support oppressed people, and trust Allah through fear and uncertainty.
  6. The khutbah closes by urging believers to choose Musa's path and seek freedom from desires, addictions, resentment, and anxiety.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

The khateeb reminded us that Jumu’ah helps us bring our attention back to Allah when life gets busy. Through the story of Musa and his mother, he encouraged us to seek courage, trust, and freedom of the heart through serving Allah. He also asked us to look honestly at how we treat others, because we can recognize injustice far away while overlooking harm we cause at home. He warned that division weakens families and communities, and called us to support people who are being wronged. This week, we can let the Quran shape our actions by treating people more gently, strengthening our relationships, and turning to Allah with our worries.

  1. What is one way we can let the story of Musa change how we act this week?
  2. How can we help someone feel heard instead of bossed around?
  3. What worry would you like to bring to Allah in your dua?
