Good character shows true faith

“The believers with the most complete faith are those with the best character.”

The khateeb, at 4:13

In one sentence

Good character (akhlaq) is not secondary to faith and ritual worship but is the fruit of true iman, the ultimate purpose of all ibadat, and the primary means by which Muslims invite others to Islam.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Many Muslims treat good manners as secondary to iman and ritual worship; this is a mistake
  2. Every act of worship (prayer, fasting, zakah, hajj) is meant to produce character, humility, self-control, generosity, patience
  3. Good character is the fruit of true faith; the Prophet tied perfection of iman to perfection of character
  4. The Prophet's own character was praised by Allah in Surat al-Qalam, among the earliest revelations; Aisha said his character was the Qur'an
  5. Throughout history and today, people embrace Islam because of Muslims' character, knowledge attracts minds, character attracts hearts
  6. Muslims in the West are ambassadors of Islam; neighbors read our actions, not the Qur'an
  7. Don't hide your Islam; call others to Allah through character, and begin by improving yourself and your home
Try this week
Make a sincere intention to improve your own character before trying to improve others
Let prayer, fasting, zakah, and hajj measurably improve your humility, self-control, generosity, and patience
Be mindful that neighbors, co-workers, and classmates read your actions as their first introduction to Islam, be honest, truthful, forgiving, and merciful in daily dealings
Do not hide your Islam; openly identify as Muslim while inviting others through good character
Improve manners within your home, marriage, family, and community as concrete starting points
