Confidence needs humility before Allah
“Before Allah takes account of you.”
The khutbah calls Muslims to replace arrogance and humiliation with humble, Allah-centered confidence, then use the passing year to remember life's limits, value time, repent, and make practical changes.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Defines kibar as rejecting truth and looking down on people, distinguishing it from enjoying good appearance.
- Uses marital arguments and hypothetical leadership to illustrate how conceit blocks truth.
- Explains that absolute greatness belongs to Allah, while believers should imitate mercy and generosity rather than divine self-sufficiency.
- Presents confidence without conceit and humility without humiliation, illustrated through Abu Dujana, Salah al-Din, and Sulayman.
- Connects Allah-centered confidence to the ummah's response to suffering in Palestine and Syria and to broader, faith-filled dua.
- Frames the end of 2024 as a reminder of mortality, Allah's everlastingness, and the signs in cosmic cycles.
- Calls listeners to value time, monitor screen use, make dua and repentance, practice nightly self-assessment, and adopt meaningful resolutions.
In the khateeb's words
“If you're able to do something tomorrow. Don't delay. Do it today.”
“Take account of yourself. Before Allah takes account of you.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us to be confident and humble, remembering that our abilities come from Allah. Arrogance means rejecting the truth and looking down on others, so admitting a mistake is something we can practice together. The ending of a year also invites us to remember that our time is limited and that Allah is everlasting. We can use our time more thoughtfully, make dua, ask forgiveness, and reflect on how we treat our families and worship Allah. We can keep growing through small, practical changes and encourage each other to try, trusting Allah with the results.
- What could you say when you realize you were wrong during an argument?
- What is one thing you would like us to do together with less screen time?
- What would you like to try even if someone else is better at it?
