Love the Prophet through action

“True love is seen through actions.”

The khateeb, at 16:15

In one sentence

True love for Prophet Muhammad is proven through actions, especially emulating his Sunnah and obeying Allah, not merely through verbal declarations or gatherings.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Uses marriage to show that love must be demonstrated through conduct.
  2. Explains the Prophet’s concern for his ummah and believers’ obligation to respond to his example.
  3. Distinguishes genuine love from merely saying “I love” or dismissing practices as “just a sunnah.”
  4. Connects love of Allah with following the Prophet and receiving Allah’s love and forgiveness.
  5. Gives practical examples involving conversation etiquette, household habits, and making intentions.
  6. Closes by urging listeners to learn and practice the Prophet’s Sunnahs gradually.
Try this week
Study the Prophet’s Sunnahs through a resource such as Shama'il al-Tirmidhi.
Choose specific Sunnahs to practice gradually rather than dismissing them as “just a sunnah.”
Make an intention for existing practices that align with the Sunnah, such as keeping water by the bed.
Avoid private conversations that exclude a third person or use a language they cannot understand.

Today’s khutbah taught that loving Prophet Muhammad is more than saying loving words or attending gatherings about him. Real love appears when we follow his Sunnah in worship, manners, and everyday relationships. We can begin with small practices, such as making an intention for a Sunnah we already do and avoiding private conversations that exclude someone nearby. The khateeb encouraged us to learn the Prophet’s example gradually, including through Shama'il al-Tirmidhi. The goal is not perfection overnight, but sincere, visible effort to imitate him.

  1. What is one Sunnah you would like to practice this week?
  2. How can we make someone feel included in a conversation?
  3. What good habit do we already have that could become worship through intention?
