Use wealth without making it life’s purpose

“If Allah gives the person wealth, alhamdulillah, use it properly.”

The khateeb, at 22:17

In one sentence

Because wealth, status, and attachment to worldly possessions can distract from worship and damage faith, Muslims should treat worldly blessings as temporary tools rather than life's purpose.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Introduces detachment from worldly life through a hadith about repairing a house and remembering death.
  2. Explains wealth as a major test for the Muslim community and urges examination of earning motives.
  3. Distinguishes basic necessities from endless accumulation, using Surah al-Hakum al-Takathir.
  4. Reframes poverty and hardship as possible tests rather than automatic signs of divine displeasure.
  5. Warns that love of wealth and fame can destroy religious commitment, while generosity and honesty endure.
  6. Closes by urging responsible use of wealth and fame and seeking lasting recognition with Allah.

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminds us that homes, cars, money, and status are temporary, while our purpose is to worship Allah and please Him. Wealth can be a serious test when it makes us forget the Hereafter or neglect our families and religious limits. Basic needs are valid, and having wealth is not itself wrong, but we should use blessings responsibly and give in charity. Hardship is not always a sign that Allah is displeased; it can also be a test shared by those Allah loves. We should seek lasting goodness with Allah rather than living only for wealth or fame.

  1. What is one thing we have that we should use more responsibly?
  2. How can we tell when wanting something has become too important?
  3. What kind of goodness would we want Allah to remember about us?
