Community renewal starts with personal change

“We need to become humble and sit down with humility.”

The khateeb, at 28:03

In one sentence

Personal transformation through taqwa, sincere worship, knowledge, humility, and ihsan must begin within individuals and families before it can renew communities and civilization.

For the dinner table

The khateeb reminded us that change in our communities begins with change inside ourselves. Our prayer and remembrance of Allah should shape how we act both around others and when we are alone. He encouraged us to practice ihsan, doing things with care and excellence, in our speech, our family relationships, and our treatment of neighbors. He also asked us to acknowledge racism and tribalism in our community and to help one another improve. As practical steps, he suggested cleaning our neighborhoods and making time to read together as a family. We can begin with small, sincere actions that turn what we learn into kindness and service.

  1. What could you say differently next time you feel frustrated with someone at home?
  2. What part of our neighborhood could we help care for together?
  3. What would you enjoy reading as a family, and what would you hope to learn?
