Success comes through self-control and repentance
“Be in control of your emotions. Regulate your temper.”
True success comes through controlling the tongue, making home a sanctuary and practicing contentment, and sincerely repenting when one falls into sin.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Success is reframed from worldly wealth and achievement to deeds and ultimate accountability.
- The first instruction is to control speech, emotions, temper, and harmful phone-based interactions.
- The second instruction is interpreted as protecting oneself at home and being content rather than comparing possessions.
- The speaker contrasts avoiding temptation with leaving home for sincere religious service and sacrifice.
- The final instruction is to show remorse, weep before Allah, and return through repentance.
- The khutbah closes by restating the three practices and praying for forgiveness and guidance.
In the khateeb's words
“Control your tongue. Be in control of your emotions. Regulate your temper.”
“Let your home be sufficient for you means that if I'm living in a smaller home, I shouldn't look at the homes of others and be jealous.”
“the best among us is not the one who's perfect the best among us is the one who turns back to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
“but if you leave and you're going out do it for a good reason”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that true success is not only money, achievement, or comfort, but reaching Allah with good deeds. The Prophet's advice can be summarized in three practices: control our tongues, let our homes protect and satisfy us, and repent when we sin. We should speak carefully, avoid harmful distractions, and resist jealousy over what others possess. Leaving home for a good purpose is valuable, but when we fall short, we should return to Allah with genuine remorse. Allah welcomes those who recognize their weakness and turn back to Him.
- When have your words recently helped or hurt someone?
- What is one distraction or comparison you could reduce at home this week?
- What helps you apologize and return to Allah after making a mistake?
