Rizq comes through worship and halal effort

“We're not asking you to worry about your rizq.”

The khateeb, at 13:22

In one sentence

Allah grants rizq through taqwa, prayer, trust, and earnest halal effort, so Muslims should prioritize worship while taking practical means rather than relying only on visible causes.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Introduces rizq as lawful sustenance and explains the Muslim balance between faith and worldly effort.
  2. Presents taqwa as the first key to provision and warns against haram shortcuts.
  3. Explains that rizq includes wealth, children, knowledge, happiness, and barakah, not only money.
  4. Connects consistent prayer and family responsibility with Allah’s provision.
  5. Distinguishes tawakkul from passivity and urges productive action.
  6. Uses Maryam’s palm-tree example to show that reliance on Allah includes effort.
  7. Concludes by urging prayer, halal work, istighfar, tawakkul, and taqwa.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

Today the khateeb talked about rizq, the provision Allah gives us, and reminded us that the Qur'an tells us the keys to it. The first key is taqwa: being mindful of Allah, obeying Him and staying away from haram, even when a haram shortcut looks faster. Allah promises that whoever has taqwa will be given a way out and provision from where they never expected. The second key is prayer: keeping our salah and helping our family pray, without making excuses because we're busy, since Allah says He will take care of our rizq. He also reminded us that rizq isn't just money. Knowledge, children, happiness and barakah are rizq too, and sometimes a little with barakah is better than a lot without it. Finally, like Maryam shaking the palm tree, we must work hard and do our part while truly trusting Allah.

  1. Besides money, what is one kind of rizq Allah has given you that you're thankful for?
  2. If Maryam could shake a big palm tree when things were hard, what is one hard thing you can 'do your part' on this week?
  3. What's one thing that sometimes gets in the way of praying on time, and how could we help each other with it?
