Choose faith over fear when tested
“This is a shift from unconscious living to conscious accountable living.”
Because Allah gives life and death to test the quality of our conduct, believers should respond to hardship and blessing with conscious, grateful, faith-driven action rather than fear.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Surah al-Mulk’s framing of life and death as a test of conduct.
- Explains how Allah’s sovereignty should move believers from reactive survival to conscious accountability.
- Recasts transformation as letting old identities and beliefs die so a better identity can emerge.
- Uses a driver’s-test story to illustrate fear, testing, and faith-based response.
- Applies hadith and Quranic teachings to life, health, free time, youth, wealth, and hardship.
- Concludes that gratitude means using Allah’s gifts well and embodying one’s faith.
In the khateeb's words
“So this is a shift from unconscious living to conscious accountable living.”
“The question is, who is best in their deeds, meaning conscious and intentional and aligned with the truth.”
“Don't they show gratitude by using what they've been given? Taking advantage of the opportunities, saying yes to the possibilities for growth and expansion.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that Allah tests us through both difficulties and blessings, and calls us to be the best in our conduct. The khateeb explained that this means acting with intention and truth, rather than simply doing the most deeds. He shared his own nervousness about a driving test to show how challenges can stir up fear, while encouraging us to make decisions from faith. He reminded us to make good use of our life, health, free time, youth, and wealth while we have them. As a family, we can practice gratitude by using Allah's gifts well and choosing thoughtful actions each day.
- When you feel nervous about a test or challenge, what helps you take the next step with faith?
- What gift has Allah given you that you could use to help someone this week?
- What is one everyday action you could do with more care and a clearer intention?
