Purify your heart beyond outward worship
“A sound heart is one that strives to stay sincere to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
The greatest barrier between a Muslim and Allah may be diseases of the heart, so believers must examine, purify, and continually reform their inner character alongside their outward worship.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- The khutbah asks listeners to examine the heart, not only outward religious actions, as a possible barrier between them and Allah.
- It defines a sound heart as sincere, repentant, humble, grateful, and willing to accept correction.
- It explains hasad, arrogance, showing off, resentment, and backbiting, with examples of how each damages worship and relationships.
- It gives remedies including self-examination, seeking Allah’s help, renewing intentions, gratitude, private advice, forgiveness, and apologizing.
- It closes by urging continued prayer with greater khushu and asking what kind of heart one will present before Allah.
In the khateeb's words
“a sound heart is one that strives to stay sincere to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala it looks for the truth even if the truth makes it uncomfortable”
“a pure heart does not need to destroy another person's reputation in order to feel valuable”
“focus on how you can be a better muslim today than you were yesterday”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah teaches us to pay attention not only to what we do outwardly, but also to what is happening inside our hearts. A sound heart can still feel anger or jealousy, but it turns back to Allah, accepts correction, and does not let those feelings control its life. We can purify our hearts by checking ourselves, renewing our intentions, thanking Allah, apologizing when wrong, forgiving without ignoring boundaries, and advising people privately. The goal is not to feel hopeless, but to keep praying and keep working toward sincerity and humility. We should ask ourselves what kind of heart we want to bring before Allah.
- What is one blessing you can thank Allah for today instead of comparing yourself with someone else?
- What can you do when you realize you were wrong?
- How can we help someone privately instead of talking about their mistake?
