Choose Allah over every blessing
“Do you love the blessing or the one who bestowed that blessing to you?”
Eid al-Adha calls believers to follow Ibrahim's path of Khalilullah by choosing Allah above every blessing, attachment, and competing priority while remaining grateful for worldly gifts.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Eid al-Adha celebrates Hajj and Ibrahim's legacy, alongside Eid al-Fitr's celebration of Ramadan and the Quran.
- Khalil is explained as the highest station of love and complete immersion in love of Allah.
- Ibrahim's repeated submission, sacrifices, and fulfillment made him worthy of divine friendship and leadership.
- Believers should choose Allah over worldly attachments while still loving careers, children, family, and blessings.
- Eid should express sacrifice, gratitude, family ties, joy, and prayer for contemporary martyrs and the people of Gaza.
In the khateeb's words
“Do you love the blessing or the one who bestowed that blessing to you?”
“It's okay to love our careers. It's okay to love our children. It's okay to love some of the dunya, but not to make it take us away from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
For the dinner table
Eid al-Adha reminds us of Ibrahim and his deep love for Allah. The khateeb explained that being Khalil means reaching the highest station of love, and he described Ibrahim's example as a path we can follow. Ibrahim responded to Allah's tests with submission and sacrifice, teaching us to put Allah first in our choices. We can love our families, our work, and the good things in life while remembering Allah and keeping those blessings from taking us away from Him. As we celebrate, we can thank Allah for our loved ones, strengthen family ties, and show kindness to family and friends.
- What is one blessing you want to thank Allah for today?
- When could remembering Allah help you make a difficult choice?
- How could we make someone in our family feel loved during Eid?
