Respond to harm with wisdom, not anger
Muslims should keep their hearts awake and pursue real protection and positive change without letting anger, suspicion, misinformation, or careless disclosure harm others.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- The khutbah urges listeners to verify information and respond to evil according to whether action, speech, or inward rejection will bring change.
- It explores restraint during severe conflict and warns against performative anger, using examples from early Muslim history and Gaza.
- It distinguishes protective verification and relevant warnings from sinful suspicion, spying, backbiting, and damage to dignity.
- It applies good opinion and careful questioning to spouses, parents, and children while retaining family responsibility and moral guidance.
- It connects misinformation and anti-Muslim suspicion to visible Muslim conduct, remembrance of Allah, and invoking one of His names for a need.
In the khateeb's words
“Because your whole objective is change. It's not to release anger. It's not to show everyone. That you stand for this or that.”
“Instead of jumping to conclusion. The first step should be. Thinking good. Especially within the family.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches us to keep our hearts awake and verify what we hear before reacting. Our goal should be real change and protection from harm, not anger, performance, or spreading suspicion. In our families, we should begin with good assumptions and ask questions gently, while still teaching children values and protecting them from danger. When direct action or speech would worsen a situation, rejecting wrong in the heart and making dua can be the wiser response. We should stay engaged as honest Muslims, remember Allah, and seek His help by calling on one of His names for our needs.
- How can we tell whether something we want to share will help people or hurt them?
- What does thinking well of our family members look like when we are confused or worried?
- Which name of Allah could you call on for a challenge you are facing?
