The Prophet's character is the whole Sunnah
The emotional intelligence of the Prophet Muhammad, shown through empathy, self-control, compassion, and dignity, is a comprehensive sunnah that Muslims must emulate in every area of life, not reduce to prayer alone.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Introduction: sunnah is the Prophet's whole character, not only acts of salah
- Emotional intelligence defined: understanding emotions, responding with compassion, exercising self-control, and inspiring through kindness
- Eight qualities of the Prophet's emotional intelligence: listening with empathy, controlling anger, recognizing individual personalities, comforting the grieving, patience with mistakes, encouraging others, gentleness with family, and forgiving enemies
- The story of Zahir ibn Hiram: the Prophet embraced, joked with, and restored the confidence of a man society considered ugly
- True worth is measured by faith and the heart, not wealth, appearance, or power
- Call to emulate the Prophet's sunnah in speech, family relations, and community dealings
- Closing supplication and community announcements
In the khateeb's words
“It's amazing to know that this man Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was placed as number one in status quo among all the Prophets, even by a person who is not a Muslim.”
“The Qur'an and the sunnah, authentic narration, portray him as someone who understood people's emotion, responded with compassion, exercised self-control, and inspired others through kindness and wisdom.”
“When a Bedouin man urinated in the masjid, what he did? The companions became upset. The prophet stopped them from reacting, partially. And the area was clean and gently explained the sanctity of the masjid.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that sunnah includes the Prophet’s entire character, not only actions connected to salah. He listened carefully, controlled his anger, comforted people who were grieving, showed patience with mistakes, and treated his family with gentleness and affection. The story of Zahir showed how the Prophet helped someone feel valuable because of what was in his heart, not because of his appearance or possessions. Our confidence and worth come from Allah and taqwa, not from wealth, looks, clothes, cars, or status. We can follow this sunnah by listening well, lifting others up, forgiving, and bringing mercy into our homes.
- What is one way you can make someone feel heard this week?
- What helps you remember your worth comes from Allah rather than possessions or appearance?
- How can our family show more gentleness and fun at home?
