The Prophets & seerahFrom the masjid's own video, May 9, 2026.

Reverence for the Prophet requires love and learning

“I must begin with loving him.”

The khateeb, at 16:25

The khutbah in 9 steps

  1. Opening on Surah al-Fath 48:8-9: sent as witness, bearer of good news, and warner, so that you honor and revere him
  2. Questioning whether saying 'sallallahu alayhi wa sallam' alone fulfills 'tu'azziruhu wa tuwaqqiruhu'
  3. Urwah ibn Mas'ud's report to Quraysh (Bukhari): no king is revered by his people as Muhammad is by his companions
  4. Love as the foundation: the Prophet must be more beloved than father, children, and all mankind
  5. Companions imitating him in everything, Anas loving pumpkin because the Prophet ate it
  6. Salawat as reverence, especially on Fridays, with Ibn al-Jawzi on its rewards
  7. Knowing him fully: Aisha's 'his character was the Quran', his physical description, his worship
  8. The three men who went to extremes and the Prophet's correction: 'whoever turns from my sunnah is not of me'
  9. Second khutbah challenge: test yourself and your family, compare passion for celebrities/sports with knowledge of the Prophet, and learn something about him daily
Try this week
Send prayers and salutations (salawat) upon the Prophet frequently, especially on Fridays
Sit down alone or with family this week and learn about the Prophet, his seerah, description, character, food, and worship
Test yourself and your children: compare what you know about celebrities and sports with what you know about the Prophet
Learn something new about the Messenger every single day
Follow his balanced sunnah, fast and break fast, pray and sleep, marry, avoiding religious extremes
Prefer the Prophet's will over your own desires when the two conflict

Sahih al-BukhariUrwah tells Quraysh after Hudaybiyyah that he has visited Caesar, Kisra, and the Negus, and never saw a leader revered by his followers as Muhammad is by his companions
Sahih al-BukhariUsed to argue that reverence begins with love of the Prophet as a condition of complete faith
Quran 33:56The command to send prayers and salutations upon the Prophet, urged especially on Fridays
Sahih MuslimTo know the Prophet's character, read the Quran, his conduct embodied it
Sahih al-BukhariTheir extremes (perpetual fasting, sleeplessness, celibacy) were corrected: 'Whoever turns away from my sunnah is not of me', reverence means following his balanced way
