Let faith shape your whole life
“Be Muslims, not 50% Muslims, not 25% Muslims, not Ramadan Muslims, not Friday Muslims, not Eid Muslims.”
Because Muslims affirm Allah, Islam, and Muhammad, that commitment should shape their entire lives through character, public ethics, knowledge, community-building, and productive conduct.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with election-year scrutiny and Islamophobic portrayals of Muslims.
- Uses the affirmation of being pleased with Allah, Islam, and Muhammad to argue that faith must govern daily life.
- Calls Muslims to public ethics, correcting misconceptions, confidence, knowledge, and strong community-building.
- Presents advice, personal capacity, and prophetic teachings as practical forms of conveying Islam.
- Urges consistent Quran reading, gradual self-improvement, mindful public behavior, and productivity.
- Uses Wahshi's acceptance after the conquest of Mecca to illustrate amnesty, human emotion, justice, and ethical conduct.
In the khateeb's words
“our lives must conform to Islam it must conform to Islam and that we must make it visible we must make it inviting to others”
“be productive as much as possible in all of your circumstances be productive”
“the best revenge is a well-lived life that's the best revenge”
“be Muslims not 50% Muslims not 25% Muslims not Ramadan Muslims not Friday Muslims not Eid Muslims be Muslims”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that saying we are pleased with Allah, Islam, and Muhammad means letting faith shape our everyday choices. We can represent Islam through good manners, honest work, kindness, thoughtful speech, and a strong, helpful community. We do not need to be perfect: we should take baby steps, learn the basics, read Quran consistently, and work on our weaknesses. The Prophet's response to Wahshi showed both the importance of mercy and amnesty and the reality of human pain. Even in difficult times, we should keep doing useful good and choose justice and good character.
- What is one way you can show good character at school or online this week?
- When might staying quiet be wiser than replying?
- What small good action could you keep doing even on a hard day?
