Trust Allah while using halal means

“Trusting Allah is never complete, it's never valid, until you act on the means.”

The khateeb, at 15:16

In one sentence

True tawakkul means attaching your heart to Allah alone, asking only Him and relying only on Him, while still acting on the means, because dependence on anything else enslaves the heart and leads to abandonment and failure.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Opening quote: don't depend on anyone in this life, even your shadow leaves you in the dark
  2. Problem: people depend on means (money, jobs, people) and their connection with Allah weakens, even falling into haram
  3. The Prophet's advice to Ibn Abbas: when you ask, ask Allah; the mukataba slave and Ali's dua for debt relief
  4. What tawakkul is: constant heart-attachment to Allah plus acting on the means (Ibn al-Qayyim)
  5. The opposite: hearts enslaved to love, status, and wealth (Ibn Taymiyyah's examples); 'whoever attaches to something is left to it'
  6. Hadith: whoever makes the akhirah his concern gains contentment; whoever makes dunya his concern sees only poverty
  7. How to build tawakkul: husn al-dhan (good thoughts of Allah) through knowledge of Him; hasbunallah of Ibrahim and the Prophet; provision like the birds

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

Today the khateeb spoke about tawakkul, truly trusting Allah instead of depending only on people, money, and the things around us. He shared a striking quote: even your shadow leaves you in the dark, so don't depend too much on anyone in this life. He told the story of a slave who couldn't pay for his freedom, and how Ali taught him the dua asking Allah to suffice him with the halal and enrich him so he needs no one else, a dua said to settle even a mountain-sized debt. He explained that trusting Allah is half of faith: your heart depends only on Him, while your hands still do the work He put within your power. And he warned that whoever attaches his heart to something other than Allah becomes its slave, but whoever makes the akhirah his concern, Allah places richness in his heart and the dunya comes to him anyway.

  1. If even your shadow leaves you in the dark, who's the one you can always count on, and how do you talk to Him?
  2. The birds leave home hungry and come back full without any plan, what does that teach us about worrying?
  3. What's one thing you could work hard at this week while leaving the result to Allah?
