True peace comes from Allah and changes us
“The servant becomes a source of peace for all of those around him.”
The khutbah argues that recognizing Allah as As-Salam, the source of perfect peace, should lead believers to obedience, inner purification, peaceful conduct, and hope for eternal peace in Paradise.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces As-Salam and explains Allah’s perfection and freedom from every defect.
- Shows Allah as the source of peace through creation, revelation, guidance, and Paradise.
- Connects peace with Allah to obedience, avoiding sin, and following Islam’s guidance.
- Calls believers to become sources of peace through gentle conduct and safe speech and hands.
- Emphasizes spreading salam and purifying the heart from envy, malice, and arrogance.
- Concludes with supplication for peaceful hearts, lives, deaths, and entry into Dar al-Salam.
In the khateeb's words
“Whoever seeks peace from other than Allah will never truly attain it. Any peace sought from other than Allah will always be deficient and lacking.”
“True peace will never be realized on earth unless it is implemented and lived as a true reality”
“the servant becomes a source of peace for all of those around him.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah invited us to reflect on Allah’s beautiful name As-Salaam, the source of peace, safety, and security. The khateeb explained that Allah is free from every imperfection and that His guidance leads us toward peace. He reminded us to put this belief into practice by fulfilling our duties to Allah and helping others feel safe around our words and actions. Even when someone treats us badly, we should strive to respond peacefully, and we should spread salaam to people we know and those we do not know. He also encouraged us to cleanse our hearts of arrogance, malice, and envy as we hope for Paradise, the everlasting home of peace.
- What is one way you could help someone feel safe and welcome at school or at home?
- Who could you greet with salaam this week whom you do not usually talk to?
- When you feel jealous or angry, what could help you respond with a more peaceful heart?
