Trust Allah while doing your part
“We take full responsibility for our own efforts.”
True tawakkul means taking every responsible practical step while trusting Allah completely with the outcome.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines tawakkul as reliance on Allah combined with personal responsibility.
- Explains that believers must work diligently while accepting that outcomes belong to Allah.
- Uses the Prophet's hijrah and Hajar's search for water as examples of effort joined with trust.
- Applies tawakkul to decision-making through research, effort, and istikhara.
- Connects reliance on Allah with practical safety precautions and daily preparation.
- Concludes that whatever Allah grants or withholds is ultimately better for the believer.
In the khateeb's words
“We take full responsibility for our own efforts. But we balance our responsibility and our faith in Allah.”
“The requirement for us is to go out and get it. But know that getting it is up to Allah.”
“Tawakul shows in your preparation. That it's manifesting when things get rough. Tawakul shows in your determination. Your hard work that you put in.”
“and if Allah has it for us we get it and if Allah doesn't have it for us we know it's better for us not to happen no matter how bad we want it”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah was about tawakul: trusting Allah while taking responsibility for our own efforts. We do the work and take sensible precautions, while remembering that the outcome belongs to Allah. The khateeb described the Prophet’s preparations for the hijrah and the mother of Ishmael’s search for help as examples of faith expressed through action. He reminded us that something we deeply want may not be best for us, even when disappointment is hard. He also encouraged us to strengthen our hearts through prayer, Quran, and remembering Allah during easier times, so that trust is there when life gets difficult.
- What is something you are working toward, and what practical step could you take while trusting Allah?
- When something does not go your way, what helps you handle the disappointment?
- What could we do as a family to remember Allah more during an ordinary day?
