Sunnah means mercy under pressure
“Your character is in your control.”
In one sentence
The khutbah argues that following the Prophet’s Sunnah means cultivating his excellent character, especially controlling reactions, forgiving wrongs, and correcting others with mercy.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Reframes Sunnah from outward practices toward prophetic character under pressure.
- Uses Anas ibn Malik’s account of the rough Bedouin to illustrate self-control.
- Explains that character appears during unpleasant moments, using the spilled-coffee metaphor.
- Draws on the Ta’if story to emphasize mercy, hope, and forgiveness.
- Applies the lesson to families, leaders, teachers, and relationships, urging Quran and seerah study.

Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“your character is in your control. My character is in my control. not any other individual.”
“In stable times, when no one's wronged us, when no one's bothered us, that's no character. Character is what comes out when... You're put to test when something unpleasant happens.”
“when I need to correct something. with the intention of protecting someone, not destroying anybody's ego.”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah taught that Sunnah is more than clothing, eating habits, or daily supplications. It also means following the Prophet’s beautiful character when people upset, insult, or wrong us. We can practice this by pausing before reacting, forgiving others, and correcting people with hope for who they can become. The khateeb encouraged us to study the Quran and the Prophet’s life so his character shapes how we treat the people closest to us.
- What situation makes it hardest for you to stay calm and kind?
- How can we correct someone without hurting their dignity?
- Which relationship of the Prophet would you like to learn more about?
