Your worth is more than appearance
“Don't judge yourself by the way you look.”
Islam protects human dignity by rejecting the treatment of people as objects and grounding self-worth in character, modesty, piety, and value before Allah rather than physical appearance.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines objectification and explains how media and social media intensify it, especially toward women.
- Uses Quranic-era examples of controlling widows and their property to show Islam rejects treating women as possessions.
- Explains self-objectification and appearance-based self-worth among young people of both genders.
- Connects modest clothing with humility, obedience, and responsibility toward others.
- Uses the hadith of Zahir to show that a person's worth exceeds physical attractiveness.
- Closes by urging families and communities to discuss objectification and affirm dignity beyond appearance.
In the khateeb's words
“They forgot about their personality. They forgot about their piety. They forgot about them being a creation of Allah Ta'ala, and it all becomes about who I am physically.”
“Don't judge yourself by the way you look. Don't judge yourself by the way you are physically.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that every person is Allah's creation and has worth beyond physical appearance. The khateeb spoke against treating people as possessions, including controlling the lives and property of women after they lose their husbands. He warned that boys and girls, men and women can come to measure their own value mainly by how they look, forgetting their character and piety. He explained that clothing should express modesty, humility, and obedience to Allah, and encouraged families to discuss these matters without putting anyone down. He ended with the story of Zahir, whom the Prophet reassured was valuable in Allah's sight, reminding us to see ourselves and others as more than our looks.
- What is something you appreciate about a friend that has nothing to do with how they look?
- How could we talk about modesty in our family so everyone feels heard and respected?
- What would you say to a friend who feels their appearance makes them worth less?
