Wealth is a test, not a right

“We need to give the wealth in charity and we need to help the poor to justify our wealth.”

The khateeb, at 31:26

In one sentence

Surah al-Kahf teaches that wealth is a test, so believers must resist entitlement, trust Allah rather than worldly means, remember blessings are temporary, and use wealth to help others.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Introduces Surah al-Kahf as a Friday reading and presents its four trials: faith, wealth, knowledge, and power.
  2. Explains that deeper reflection and tafsir reveal the Quranic stories’ underlying focus on tawheed.
  3. Examines the wealthy owner of two gardens, whose entitlement leads him to trust his wealth and deny the Resurrection.
  4. Contrasts him with his believing friend, who offers sincere counsel and reminds him to say mashallah and recognize Allah’s power.

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah explored the story of the two gardens in Surah Al-Kahf and what it teaches us about wealth. The garden owner became proud of his success and assumed his blessings would last forever. His friend sincerely reminded him of Allah and encouraged him to recognize that his blessings and strength came from Allah. The khateeb reminded us to work hard while placing our trust in Allah, and to say mashallah with an understanding of its meaning. He encouraged us to reflect on the Quran, give charity, and help people in need with what Allah has given us.

  1. What is one blessing you could say mashallah for today, and what would you mean by saying it?
  2. How could you remind a friend to be grateful without embarrassing them?
  3. What could we share this week to help someone in need?
