Human worth is God-given

In one sentence

Human worth is intrinsic and God-given, established by the three gifts Allah announced in Adam's creation (clay origin, the balancing rational faculty, and the divine spirit), and the devil's core strategy is to convince us we are worthless so we seek validation from creation instead of the Creator.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Recap of last week: do not lose hope in Allah's mercy despite repeated falling
  2. The often-missed detail in Adam's story: Allah announced his creation before making him (Surah Sad 38:71-72)
  3. Three descriptors of the human: from clay (shared with animals), taswiya/balance (the aql restraining instinct), and the ruh breathed from Allah
  4. The angels' prostration as recognition of something miraculous in the human being
  5. Iblis mentioned only the clay to deny human status and worth
  6. Consequences of low self-worth: living performatively for likes, accepting mistreatment, elders feeling valueless after retirement
  7. True worth comes from Allah's honor (Wa laqad karramna bani Adam), virtue, and balance, not material measures
  8. Closing du'a (including for Gaza and Palestine) and iqamah for prayer
Try this week
Stop seeking worth and validation from people (social media likes, constant approval-seeking) and seek it in Allah's pleasure instead
Cultivate balance (taswiya): deliberate before decisions, restrain impulse with the rational faculty, balance personal needs with family and societal obligations
Recognize and honor the worth of elders in the community for their wisdom rather than measuring people by earning power
Reject pride in unearned attributes (appearance, lineage, genetics) and measure yourself and others by virtue and the spirit, not material status
Sources the khateeb cited
Surah 38Core text: Allah announced Adam's creation to the angels before creating him, establishing the three descriptors (clay, perfection/balance, the spirit)
Surah 15Parallel expression 'inni khaliqun basharan min salsalin min hama'in masnoon' reinforcing that the announcement preceded creation
Quran 17:70Used to argue that Allah Himself honored the children of Adam, so human worth is divinely established
Quran 17:85The human spirit is a secret of Allah, the human's window to connect with the divine
Quran 89:5Linguistic evidence that the intellect (hijr, nuhah) functions to restrain and prohibit harmful impulse

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

Today the shaykh retold the story of Prophet Adam's creation and pointed out a detail we often miss: Allah announced to the angels that He was going to create a human, made of three things. First, clay from the earth, which we share with the animals; second, a beautiful balance that lets us pause and think instead of just chasing every impulse; and third, a spirit breathed into us directly from Allah, which no animal has. When the angels saw all this, they bowed down in awe, but Iblis only talked about the clay, because he didn't want human beings to be seen as worthy, and his greatest trick is convincing us we are worthless. When we believe that lie, we start begging for approval, likes, comments, other people's opinions, and let people walk all over us. But Allah says, 'We have honored the children of Adam': our worth comes from our Creator, from living with balance, and from growing our souls in virtue, not from money, looks, or applause.

  1. The shaykh said our mind is like a brake for our impulses, what's one impulse you wish you could hit the brakes on more often?
  2. The angels were amazed by us before we were even born, so why do you think people still chase 'likes' to feel like they matter?
  3. If our worth doesn't come from money or looks, what do you think makes a person truly valuable?
