Follow Khadijah’s example of faith and care
“She did not dismiss his fear, she comforted him and reassured him.”
The khutbah teaches Muslims to emulate Khadijah’s faith, courage, generosity, and compassionate support by comforting the fearful and serving those burdened by hardship.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Recounts the Prophet Muhammad’s first revelation and his fear upon returning home.
- Highlights Khadijah’s immediate comfort and reassurance rather than criticism.
- Explains Khadijah’s virtues of maintaining family ties, helping the weak, honoring guests, and assisting the afflicted.
- Draws lessons of faith, courage, honesty, and generosity from Khadijah’s example.
- Urges listeners to follow exemplary women and closes with prayers for increased faith, oppressed Muslims, the sick, and the deceased.
In the khateeb's words
“Help those who have nothing, warner your guests and assist those who are afflicted by difficulties in the cause of truth, in the cause of right.”
“She did not criticize the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, she did not dismiss his fear, she comforted him and reassured him and remained him of his good character.”
“So if you follow her guidance, definitely you will be with her, inshaAllah, on the day of judgment.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah focused on Khadijah’s beautiful response when the Prophet Muhammad returned home frightened after the first revelation. She did not criticize or dismiss him; she comforted him and reminded him of his good character. Her example teaches us to maintain family ties, help people who are struggling, honor guests, and support those facing hardship. The khutbah also encouraged us to grow in faith, courage, honesty, and generosity. We were reminded to pray for oppressed people, the sick, the deceased, and stronger faith for ourselves.
- How can we comfort someone who is scared or overwhelmed?
- What is one way our family can help someone who has little?
- Which quality of Khadijah would you most like to practice this week?
