A better society starts with character
“We require as a Muslim community as a whole to go back to the basics.”
The Qur'an is a blueprint for personal faith and social renewal, so Muslims should embody justice, kindness, family ties, honest conduct, and neighborliness to improve the wider society.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Frames the Qur'an primarily as guidance and a blueprint for Muslim life.
- Explains free will and Allah's commanded principles for a successful society.
- Unpacks justice, goodness, kinship, and prohibitions against indecency, corruption, and aggression.
- Uses the Ansar and early Muslim transformation to illustrate selfless service.
- Retells Ja'far's account of Islam, emphasizing truthfulness, trust, family ties, and good neighbors.
- Calls Muslims in America to return to basics, improve character, and leave a positive legacy.
In the khateeb's words
“The problem that we have faced as a Muslim society is that a lot of times we have not taken it as a book of hidayah.”
“But when it comes to what I call the pillars or the principles of a successful society, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala took away ikhtiyar, He took away choice.”
“And their people wanted to become like them. Just teach us how we can become like you.”
“We require as a Muslim community as a whole to go back to the basics. to rethink what it means for us to be Muslims in this country.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that the Qur’an is a book of guidance that should shape how we live and treat people. He explained that a successful society needs justice, goodness beyond justice, and kindness to family, while rejecting indecency, corruption, and aggression. He described how the Prophet’s teachings transformed people, including the Ansar, who shared what they loved without seeking recognition. Through Ja’far’s explanation of Islam, he highlighted truthful speech, keeping trusts, caring for relatives, and being good neighbors alongside prayer, zakah, and fasting. Even something as ordinary as where we park can affect our neighbors and how they understand Islam. As a family, we can put this guidance into practice through small, consistent acts of honesty, kindness, and service.
- What could you share or give to help someone without expecting praise?
- When someone trusts you with a promise or a belonging, how can you show that their trust matters?
