Islam is a mission for every believer
“We need to rediscover the original true Islam preached by Muhammad SAW.”
Islam must be rediscovered not as a set of rituals but as a life mission, risala bimaqasad, where every believer, following the Prophet's Meccan example, becomes an emissary of the message within their own circle through commitment, Quranic study, and prophetic leadership.
The khutbah in 10 steps
- Open with gratitude to Allah and a reminder of mortality: prepare for death before it arrives
- Call to rediscover the original Islam preached by Muhammad after centuries of distortion
- The Prophet grasped from the first revelation the immense scope of his mission to guide humanity
- Early Meccan verses (Surah al-Muzzammil and al-Muddaththir) laid the foundation: night prayer, devotion, warning, purity, and steadfastness
- The Sahaba embraced Islam as a mission immediately, exemplified by Rabi ibn Amr's statement to the Persian empire
- Abu Bakr as-Siddiq used his knowledge, social network, and wealth to spread Islam from day one
- Sa'd ibn Mu'adh accepted Islam through Musab ibn Umair and instantly called his people to it
- The Prophet built a solid core at Dar al-Arqam, then expanded through small halaqat focused on understanding and implementing the Quran
- The mission has two components: da'wah and islah, calling people and correcting wrongs in the world
- Conclusion: the essence of Islam is dedicating oneself to understanding and fulfilling Allah's purpose
In the khateeb's words
“we need to rediscover the original true Islam preached by Muhammad SAW”
“there was no fiqh there was no rituals there was nothing there is a cause there is a mission that you need to embrace”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that Allah has given us countless blessings, while life is moving quickly and death can come at any time. The khateeb encouraged us to rediscover Islam as a life mission, not only a list of rituals. He highlighted early teachings about night prayer, Qur’an recitation, purification, patience, and steadfastness as preparation for serving Allah. Every believer has a responsibility to be a good example and share goodness within their own circle. Families and communities can grow by studying the Qur’an together, understanding it, and putting it into practice.
- What is one blessing from Allah you noticed today?
- What is one small good deed you could do for someone in your circle this week?
- What Qur’an lesson would you like our family to understand and practice together?
