Ihsan should shape every part of life
“The sincere deed done for Allah azzawajal upon the Sunnah of Muhammad alayhi salatu wassalam that's your ihsan.”
The khutbah argues that ihsan, doing every deed beautifully, sincerely, and according to Allah's guidance, is the purpose of life and must shape worship, relationships, speech, commerce, and everyday conduct.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines ihsan as excellence and beauty beyond bare justice, tying it to life's test.
- Explains Allah's ihsan in creation, revelation, and judgment, and calls believers to respond with gratitude.
- Applies ihsan to parents, children, animals, non-Muslims, speech, conflict, marriage, business, neighbors, and public behavior.
- Connects ihsan in worship with awareness that Allah sees the believer and with following the Prophet's example.
- Offers sincerity for Allah and conformity to the Sunnah as tests for whether an action is truly ihsan.
- Closes with supplications for ihsan, forgiveness, steadfastness, and relief for Muslims facing oppression in Gaza and Palestine.
In the khateeb's words
“then you will find that this person who is your enemy had become your friend”
“the sincere deed done for Allah azzawajal upon the sunnah of muhammad alayhi salatu wassalam that's your ihsan”
For the dinner table
Ihsan means doing things beautifully, carefully, and in a way that pleases Allah. The khateeb taught that it should appear in worship, family life, speech, business, treatment of neighbors, and even care for animals. When conflict happens, we should choose kinder words and avoid humiliation or revenge. We should remember that Allah sees us, and check whether our actions are sincere and consistent with the Prophet's example. Small acts of ihsan can train us to respond beautifully in bigger challenges.
- Where could you choose a kinder word this week?
- What small act of ihsan could our family practice tomorrow?
- How can remembering that Allah sees us change what we do when nobody else is watching?
