Justice means going beyond the minimum
“If you can't treat the people in front of you well, you cannot treat people who are not there in front of you.”
Surah al-Nahl 90 maps a connected path from spiritual justice (adl), to excellence (ihsan), to fulfilling others’ rights, while rejecting immorality, sin, and transgression.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opens with prayers for sick and deceased community members.
- Introduces Surah al-Nahl 90 through Allah’s creation, blessings, and power.
- Explains that religious practice is interconnected and cannot be selectively practiced.
- Defines adl as spiritual alignment with Allah and justice toward others.
- Defines ihsan as exceeding the minimum and resisting the gradual spread of sin.
- Connects family responsibility and maintaining relationships with rejecting transgression.
- Concludes with self-examination, personal reform, supplication, and communal reminders.
In the khateeb's words
“Everything leads to one thing and one thing leads to the next.”
“Your loyalty cannot be to your shahwat and to your desires, while saying that my loyalty is to Allah SWT and Rasulullah SAW.”
“If you can't treat the people in front of you well, you cannot treat people who are not there in front of you.”
For the dinner table
This khutbah centers on Surah al-Nahl 90, a verse that links faith to justice, excellence, family responsibility, and avoiding wrongdoing. The speaker says adl begins with straightening our relationship with Allah and treating people fairly. Ihsan means going beyond the bare minimum in worship and service, so our hearts leave less room for sin. We should protect family ties and oppose transgression, beginning with the people closest to us. The khutbah closes by urging honest self-examination before judging others.
- What is one good deed you can do this week beyond the minimum?
- Which family relationship could use more kindness or attention?
- What is one personal flaw you can work on before criticizing someone else?
