Gentleness is the Prophet's central virtue
“The center point is soft nature.”
The khutbah argues that soft-temperedness (rifq) is the central beauty of the Prophet Muhammad's character, a divine virtue that should be consciously cultivated in relationships.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Presents the Prophet as the beautiful example and identifies gentleness as central to his character.
- Explains gentleness as a special mercy from Allah and contrasts it with harsh speech and hardness of heart.
- Uses hadith to connect gentleness with beauty, divine favor, and safety from Hellfire.
- Uses the aftermath of Uhud to show forgiveness, prayer for others, and continued consultation after mistakes.
- Illustrates gentleness through the Prophet's response to a hostile greeting and his handling of a confession of zina.
- Urges listeners to study the Prophet's life and deliberately adopt a softer nature.
In the khateeb's words
“the being soft nature it is a quality that Allah tabarak wa ta'ala has mentioned in the Quran as a special mercy upon the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam”
“when you have the virtues in front of you when you have the seer of prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in front of you then you can adopt slowly you can adopt”
“the beauty of Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam's character in your life the center point is soft nature try to adopt this”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that gentleness, or rifq, is one of the clearest beauties of the Prophet Muhammad's character. Allah praised this quality and warned that harsh speech and a hard heart can drive people away. At Uhud, the Prophet forgave his companions, asked Allah to forgive them, and continued to consult them after their mistake. His responses to hurtful words and to a man's confession also show him looking for mercy and privacy. We can grow in this quality by studying his life and choosing softer, more approachable responses this week.
- What is one situation this week where speaking softly could help someone stay close?
- How can we forgive a mistake while still learning from it?
- What would it look like to be easier to approach at home?
