Faith grows through knowledge and good character
“You do your part, and then you put your trust in God.”
Muslims should protect their faith through knowledge and pursue the qualities Allah loves, including excellence, mindfulness, trust, patience, repentance, purity, fairness, and unity.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Warns that losing faith should be the greatest fear and that youth face doubts.
- Argues that Islam contains abundant love and that believers need knowledge to answer misconceptions.
- Explains eight qualities Allah loves: ihsan, taqwa, tawakkul, patience, repentance, purification, fairness, and unity.
- Applies these qualities to worship, work, private conduct, hardship, relationships, and community life.
- Closes by urging continued learning, Quranic practice, repentance, fairness, patience, and unity.
In the khateeb's words
“This should be the biggest fear that all of us should have which is losing our faith.”
“Everything in Islam is logical. And every one of these accusations or misconceptions, we do have an answer for it. But we have to learn how to answer them.”
“The true meaning of tawakkul, that you do your part, and then you put your trust in God.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb began with a prayer asking Allah to keep our hearts on the right path, and he encouraged us to strengthen our faith through learning. He explained that love appears throughout the Quran and the Prophet’s teachings, including Allah’s love for people who practice certain qualities. These include excellence with kindness, doing what is right even when alone, patience, repentance, cleanliness inside and out, fairness, unity, and trust in Allah. Trusting Allah means making our own effort and then placing the outcome in His hands. When we make mistakes, we can turn directly to Allah for forgiveness at any time. As a family, we can put these lessons into practice by treating people fairly, helping one another, and choosing one quality to work on together.
- What is one thing you could do with both care and kindness tomorrow?
- When something feels difficult, what can you do before leaving the outcome to Allah?
- How could we help everyone feel included when we work together?
