Answer evil with gentleness and good
“Right now is the time for our hearts to become soft.”
In one sentence
In an age of cancel culture and hardened hearts, believers must cultivate the Prophet's gentleness (rifq) and beautify their inner character (khuluq), responding to evil with goodness, because Allah judges hearts and deeds, not outward appearance.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opening story: the Jews of Madinah twist the greeting to 'as-samu alayka', Aisha retorts, and the Prophet corrects her with 'Allah is gentle and loves gentleness in every affair'
- Framing against cancel culture: the believer's internal character must match or exceed the external (short salah when leading others, long salah alone; the mirror dua 'kama hassanta khalqi fa hassan khuluqi')
- Clothing covers faults and adorns, but the best clothing is taqwa; Allah looks at hearts and actions, not forms or wealth (Sahih Muslim)
- The Prophet's character was the Quran; he was sent to perfect noble character (Anas, Jabir, Aisha, Mu'adh narrations)
- Surah al-Qalam: 'khuluqin azim', great character as the opposite of insanity, per Mufti Shafi's Ma'arif al-Qur'an
- Abu Bakr and Mistah during the ifk: keep financially supporting even your slanderer, 'don't you wish Allah would forgive you?'
- Warning against hardened hearts (Bani Israel, Surah al-Baqarah 2:74, Surah al-Hadid), hearts can be revived like dead earth; closes with Umar's dua to be made gentle
Try this week
Respond to insults and evil with goodness and peaceful words rather than confrontation
Forgive others and do not cut off ties quickly over small offenses, as Abu Bakr did with Mistah
Correct family and elders gently, the way Ibrahim addressed his father ('ya abati'), instead of harshly
Make dua asking Allah to soften your heart, using Umar's dua: turn my harshness into gentleness, weakness into strength, miserliness into generosity
Keep congregational prayer short when leading others, out of consideration for the weak, sick, and elderly
