The Quran still proves Muhammad's prophethood

“Hiraql did not ask about miracles and was not interested in miracles.”

The khateeb, at 11:09

In one sentence

The story of Heraclius interrogating Abu Sufyan proves Muhammad's prophethood through his character, message, and the enduring miracle of the Quran, proofs still available today, so faith does not depend on witnessing miracles, and true believers, like the prophets, pass through defeat and purification before final victory.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. First khutbah: Abu Sufyan (then still a non-Muslim) summoned before Heraclius, who interrogates him about the Prophet
  2. Heraclius' checklist: noble lineage, novel claim, no royal ancestry, followed by the weak, increasing followers, no apostasy, never lied, never betrays
  3. Lessons drawn: companions believed because of the message not miracles; a habitual liar about small things will lie about big things
  4. The pattern of the prophets: early defeat and testing, then ultimate victory, the same pattern for believers who truly follow Muhammad
  5. The Prophet's letter to Heraclius ('accept Islam and you will be safe') including Quran 3:64; commotion in the palace; Abu Sufyan's realization Islam would prevail
  6. Second khutbah: continuation narrated by the bishop of Jerusalem, Heraclius reads the stars, the scholar in Rome confirms the prophethood, the dignitaries' riot, Heraclius retreats out of fear for his power
  7. Close: the greatest remaining miracle is the Quran, pick it up, read it, let it guide you, followed by extended du'a including for Gaza and Palestine
Try this week
Do not let your faith weaken over not having witnessed the Prophet's miracles; accept Islam on the strength of the message
Guard your honesty in small matters (business, trade, marriage, excuses), because habitual small lies build toward the greatest lies
Expect and endure a period of defeat and purification before victory if you truly follow the Prophet
When you have doubts or questions, pick up the Quran, read it, reflect on it, and let it guide you
Remember in da'wah that the weak, not the elites, are typically the ones first attracted to the message
Sources the khateeb cited
Sahih al-BukhariThe spine of the entire khutbah: Heraclius' questions about the Prophet's lineage, followers, honesty, and battles used to prove his prophethood
Quran 3:64Quoted as the ayah the Prophet included in his letter to Heraclius; explained as calling to worship Allah alone and not obeying each other in disobedience

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah told the story of the Byzantine emperor Hercules questioning Abu Sufyan about the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. Hercules had a careful checklist of what a true prophet looks like, and the Prophet matched every point: noble lineage, complete honesty, followers among the weak, growing numbers, and no betrayal. Even so, Hercules did not embrace Islam because he was afraid of losing his throne and power. The khateeb reminded us that we do not need to have seen physical miracles to believe; the Quran itself is the greatest miracle left with us. The lesson is to let the truth shape our lives rather than letting fear, status, or comfort hold us back.

  1. Why do you think an emperor who knew the truth was still afraid to become Muslim?
  2. What does it mean to be honest in 'small things', and why does that matter for big things too?
  3. How can the Quran be a miracle we can actually hold in our hands?
