Resist consumerism to protect your faith
“The real cost of consumerism is our spirituality.”
Consumerism, through mindless information consumption and excessive purchasing, is engineered to distract Muslims from Allah, damage spiritual and communal life, and should be resisted through mindful pausing, simplicity, and contribution.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines consumerism as an internal distraction from tawheed and faith.
- Distinguishes consuming online information from buying goods through sale culture.
- Shows how digital design, social proof, scarcity, and tracking drive purchases.
- Connects overconsumption to waste, environmental harm, anxiety, comparison, and isolation.
- Contrasts consumerism with the Prophet’s simplicity and spiritual richness.
- Calls listeners to pause before buying and redirect spending toward helping families.
In the khateeb's words
“The demand is engineered. Everything designed in a way that we are pushed to buy and buy and buy and consume and consume and consume.”
“the real cost of consumerism is our spirituality. It reduces God consciousness. We all have to think that how many times did I think about my actions?”
“One thing is that obviously as I mentioned that pausing before, is it needed? Is it a want? Or is it a need? Am I going to please Allah? Am I going to please my family?”
For the dinner table
The khutbah warns that consumerism can quietly take over our attention, money, and hearts. Much of what we see online is designed to make us buy quickly, compare ourselves, and keep consuming. Islam teaches us to value simplicity, remember Allah, and care about how we use the blessings we have. Before buying, we can pause and ask whether something is truly needed and whether our money could help someone more. A rich life is not measured by possessions, but by a heart connected to Allah and willing to contribute.
- What is one thing you could pause before buying this week?
- How could we turn part of our spending into help for another person?
- What does being rich in the soul mean to you?
