Faith means keeping every trust
“The believers are those that maintain their trust.”
Believers demonstrate faith and attain success by treating every trust and promise with integrity, especially when they hold power, following the Prophet Muhammad’s example.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- The Qur’an identifies successful believers as people who safeguard trusts and keep their promises.
- The shepherd analogy illustrates vigilant care for every responsibility, making integrity a practical expression of faith.
- The Prophet’s treatment of Safwan at the conquest of Mecca demonstrates security, fairness, borrowing, inventory, and compensation.
- Integrity is most tested when a person has power and controls resources.
- The khutbah closes by connecting trustworthiness and keeping one’s word to iman and deen, followed by prayers for integrity and Gaza.
In the khateeb's words
“the believers are those that maintain their trust. They maintain their word.”
“a true believer is someone that when they've been entrusted with something, when they've been given their word about something, that when they go to sleep, they go to sleep thinking about their promise.”
“But how do I conduct myself when I have the upper hand? When I'm in control, when I control all the resources,”
“what will actually convert them to Islam and will open their hearts to Islam is your character.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that successful believers are people who protect what is entrusted to them and keep their word. The speaker compares this responsibility to a shepherd watching over a flock and reminds us that integrity requires steady attention. The Prophet Muhammad showed this character when he protected Safwan, borrowed his weapons fairly, and compensated him for any damage. Our character matters especially when we have power, because fairness and trust can open hearts to Islam. This week, we can practice faith by keeping promises and treating people honestly in every setting.
- What is one promise or responsibility you need to take better care of?
- How should we act when we have more power or control than someone else?
- How can our actions show others what Islam teaches?
