Lift broken spirits through compassionate acts

“You mend the souls of those that are broken.”

The khateeb, at 9:34

For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah taught that Al-Jabbar is a name of Allah with three meanings: He is beyond our full understanding, His decree prevails, and He mends what is broken. When people are hurting, we should worship Allah by practicing jabr al-khawatir, lifting their spirits instead of adding to their pain. The khutbah connected this to the prayer between the two prostrations, where we ask Allah to forgive, guide, and mend us. We can live this teaching by smiling, visiting the sick, helping a struggling neighbor, and paying attention to small griefs. Just as the Prophet noticed a child’s sadness over a lost bird, we should make room for compassionate care in ordinary moments.

  1. Which meaning of Al-Jabbar do you find most comforting, and why?
  2. Who might need encouragement or kindness from our family this week?
  3. What small act could we do to lift someone’s spirit?
