Awaiting the Imam means living with justice
“If our lifestyle is not consistent with that du'a, then that du'a has no value.”
During the occultation of the Twelfth Imam, believers should actively await his return through sincere prayer and lives aligned with Islam, justice, solidarity with the oppressed, contentment, and generosity.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces intidhar al-faraj as active awaiting during the Imam’s occultation, supported by traditions.
- Explains that longing for the Imam should produce persistent, heartfelt prayer rather than customary recitation alone.
- Argues that supplication must be matched by obedience and daily alignment with the Imam’s goals of Islam, justice, and defending the oppressed.
- Turns to global suffering and identifies greed as a root of oppression both internationally and within individual hearts.
- Uses Quranic teachings and geopolitical examples to show how unchecked desire produces dissatisfaction, exploitation, and war profiteering.
- Prescribes contentment, gratitude before purchases, regular giving, generosity, and limits on consumption.
In the khateeb's words
“But this type of intidhar is not a passive waiting Where for example there is a movie that starts in an hour”
“If our lifestyle Is not consistent with that du'a Then that du'a has no value”
“I have to be just to myself I have to be just to my family I have to be just in my community”
“But before you buy something, remember ten things you're grateful for.”
For the dinner table
Sheikh Jaffer explains that awaiting the 12th Imam means actively preparing through the way we live each day. He encourages us to remember the Imam with heartfelt prayer, including outside our usual prayer times. Our actions should support those prayers by practicing Islam consistently, treating others justly, and supporting people who are oppressed. He also asks us to examine greed in our own hearts and turn our desires toward Allah. As a family, we can practice contentment by appreciating what we already have, remembering ten blessings before buying something, giving regularly, and deciding when we have enough.
- What is one action you could take tomorrow to help prepare for the Imam's return?
- Where could we be fairer in how we treat one another at home?
- What ten things are you grateful for before thinking about something new you want?
