Faith must be lived through good deeds
“Solidarity means that you are helping others because you want to preserve the humanity.”
The khutbah argues that genuine Islam requires prioritizing prayer and embodying faith through health, solidarity, fair dealing, truthfulness, and peaceful wisdom.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Links recurring Friday prayer with the reward of a “little Hajj” and urges commitment to Jumu'ah.
- Explains that belittling prayer means delaying it without excuse and failing to give it focused priority.
- Urges believers to practice virtues before preaching them and to cooperate in righteousness, including protecting health.
- Defines solidarity as sharing communal hardship, illustrated by Imam al-Sadiq distributing wheat during scarcity.
- Uses Musadif's excessive trade profit to teach fairness, truthfulness, and trustworthiness.
- Recounts Hudaybiyyah, Umm Salalah's counsel, and the Prophet's preference for dialogue, peace, and wise judgment.
- Closes by asking Allah for rushd, the discernment to make right decisions.
In the khateeb's words
“When you say Allahu Akbar, it means that nothing should actually compete the Salat with you.”
“Solidarity means that you are helping others because you want to preserve the humanity.”
“Actually, when we say they are Imams, when we say this is Imam Sadiq, because what he believes, what he preaches, actually is compatible with his action.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that Friday prayer should be treated as a priority, not something to postpone without a valid reason. It taught that faith must be visible in how we live: by speaking truthfully, keeping trust, caring for our health, and helping others in righteousness. Through Imam al-Sadiq's examples, we heard that solidarity means sharing people's hardship during scarcity and refusing to exploit someone else's need for profit. The story of Hudaybiyyah showed the wisdom of dialogue, patience, and peace, including the value of listening to a wife's counsel. We can ask Allah for rushd, the clarity to make right decisions, and practice these values this week.
- What is one way we can help someone who is having a difficult week?
- When is it hard to choose fairness over personal gain?
- What decision would you like Allah to help you make wisely?
