Measure wealth by Allah’s standards

“If you have a successful dunya measured by Allah telling you it's successful then you will have a successful akhirah.”

The khateeb, at 14:37

In one sentence

Muslims should measure financial success by Allah’s standards, avoid gambling and extreme uncertainty in transactions, and repent and purify wealth from past violations.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Quranic guidance establishes that gambling and intoxicants’ harms outweigh their apparent benefits.
  2. The khutbah explains that ordinary transactions are permissible by default, while gharar means extreme ambiguity or uncertainty.
  3. Examples include futures contracts, raffles, mystery goods, online cars, and sports betting.
  4. The Abu Bakr wager narration is contextualized as predating the prohibition of gambling and not a basis for modern betting.
  5. Contested areas such as options, travel bidding, buffets, and cryptocurrency are discussed with caution and conditions.
  6. Listeners are told how to repent, stop impermissible practices, and purify questionable wealth.

Today’s khutbah reminded us that not every way of making money is good for us, even if it looks profitable. Allah teaches that gambling and intoxicants may seem to offer benefits, but their harm and sin are greater. In business, we should seek clarity, avoid betting and deceptive uncertainty, and inspect or secure the right to return things when important details are hidden. If we have made mistakes, we should sincerely repent, stop the practice, and give away some of the questionable gains when we can do so without harming ourselves. Allah knows our circumstances and calls us toward honest wealth and success in both this life and the next.

  1. How can we tell whether a money-making opportunity is clear and honest?
  2. What does it mean to measure success by Allah’s standards?
  3. If we make a money mistake, what is one way to repair it?
