Love the Prophet by following his Sunnah
“You cannot learn about the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam without increasing in your love.”
Muslims should love the Prophet Muhammad because he guides them to Allah, cared deeply for his ummah, and should be honored by learning and following his Sunnah with balanced devotion.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Muhammad as Allah’s chosen messenger and the light sent after Isa.
- Explains that loving the Prophet leads believers to know and love Allah.
- Describes his concern for the ummah through intercession, prayer, tears, and mercy.
- Illustrates the Companions’ love through sacrifice, protection, and imitation.
- Calls listeners to learn his life and practice his Sunnah rather than inventing religious practices.
- Warns against excessive veneration and closes with supplications for love, guidance, and intercession.
In the khateeb's words
“Through him, we increase in our love for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“He didn't even use it for his own family. But he reserved this for all of us, for every single one of us on the day of judgment.”
“Number one is to learn about him. You cannot learn about the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam without increasing in your love.”
“If it's something that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam loves, then I'm gonna love it.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that loving the Prophet Muhammad is part of truly knowing and loving Allah. The Prophet cared deeply for his ummah, praying for them and reserving a special supplication for them on the Day of Judgment. We can grow in love by learning about his life, practicing his Sunnah, and following his guidance. This love should be sincere but balanced: we honor him as Allah’s servant and messenger without worshiping or exaggerating his status. We should also help others learn about and love him.
- Which story from the khutbah best showed the Prophet’s care for his ummah, and why?
- What is one Sunnah you would like to learn or practice this week?
- How can we show love for the Prophet while keeping our respect balanced?
