Good character raises your rank in Paradise

“In the Akhira, it's not about how much wealth you have, or the lineage, or the status in society.”

The khateeb, at 3:32

In one sentence

The currency that determines your rank in the Hereafter is not wealth or status but the completeness of your Iman and righteous deeds, and the heaviest of these is excellent character (akhlaq), which can elevate a believer to the level of those who fast by day and pray by night.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Levels in the Akhira far exceed the levels of wealth and status in the dunya (Quran on degrees and favors)
  2. The currency of the Hereafter is complete Iman and righteous deeds, and the most complete Iman belongs to the one with the best character
  3. The Prophet's guarantee: houses in Paradise for leaving arguments when right, abandoning lying even in jest, and perfecting character
  4. Good character is obligatory, not optional: the two women hadith and bad character spoiling deeds like vinegar spoils honey
  5. Redefining akhlaq beyond Western politeness: good manners with Allah (believing revelation, implementing rulings, contentment with qadr) and with creation
  6. The four foundational narrations of akhlaq per Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani: leave what does not concern you, speak good or stay silent, do not get angry, love for your brother what you love for yourself
  7. Closing exhortation to make the Prophet's dua for good character, since perfecting manners is hard and needs Allah's help
Try this week
Leave arguments even when you know you are right
Abandon lying completely, even when joking
Control your tongue: speak good or remain silent, and never harm others with it
Do not occupy yourself with what does not concern you
Restrain your anger, control your tongue and limbs when provoked
Purify your heart of jealousy, grudges, and resentment; love for your brother what you love for yourself
Accept and implement Allah's rulings even when the wisdom is unclear, and face His decree with patience
Regularly make the Prophet's dua asking Allah to guide you to good character and protect you from bad manners

Quran 17:21People are favored over one another in provision, but the Hereafter is greater in ranks and favors, establishing that Akhira levels exceed dunya levels
Quran 20:75Whoever comes as a believer having done righteous deeds will have the highest degrees, deeds and Iman determine one's level
Jami` at-TirmidhiNothing is heavier on the believer's scale on the Day of Judgment than good character

Sahih MuslimEven the Prophet, of best character, asked Allah to guide him to good manners and protect him from bad ones, so we should do the same

For the dinner table

Today the khateeb reminded us that the levels of Paradise are not decided by money, family name, or social status, but by Iman and righteous deeds, especially good character. He explained that true Islamic manners have two parts: good character with Allah, which means believing His words, obeying His rulings, and accepting His decree with patience; and good character with people, which includes guarding our tongue, controlling anger, and wishing good for others. The Prophet, peace be upon him, guaranteed a house in the highest level of Paradise for the one with excellent character, and he warned that bad manners can spoil good deeds the way vinegar spoils honey. We can follow his example by asking Allah sincerely to guide us to good manners and to protect us from bad ones.

  1. Can you think of a time today when staying quiet or speaking kindly made things better?
  2. What is one small way we can show good manners to Allah and to each other this week?
  3. If good character is heavy on your scale on Judgment Day, what habit can you start?
