Faith means keeping every responsibility
“He was not able to fulfill his responsibility; he accepted accountability for it.”
True faith is demonstrated by honoring covenants, accepting responsibility, remaining consistent after failure, and fulfilling every duty entrusted to us.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with the Quranic command to fulfill covenants and narrates the Prophet’s Farewell Hajj.
- Examines the Prophet’s question to his companions about conveying his mission and Allah’s witness.
- Shows how prophetic gentleness coexisted with firm expectations of responsibility and promise-keeping.
- Uses Ka'b ibn Malik’s delayed departure to teach accountability, sincerity, and eventual restoration.
- Applies trustworthiness to family, work, worship, and communal responsibilities amid the Ummah’s hardships.
- Closes by urging consistency, repentance after failure, and fulfillment of every covenant.
In the khateeb's words
“He was kind, Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. He was gentle, Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. He was soft, Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. But he Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam did not let those qualities stop him from the mission that he had.”
“But what makes Ka'ab radiAllahu Anhu so incredible in such a moment was that he was someone who when he did not, he was not able to fulfill his responsibility, he accepted accountability for it.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that keeping promises and carrying responsibilities are central parts of faith. The Prophet Muhammad was gentle and kind, but he never let kindness keep him from fulfilling the mission Allah gave him. The story of Ka'b ibn Malik shows that sincere people can fail, yet honesty, accountability, patience, and returning to Allah can lead to redemption. We should give our family, work, worship, community, and other commitments their due, while continuing steadily even when we cannot be perfect. When we fall short, we should own it, get back up, and keep our word.
- Which promise or responsibility do you want to take more seriously this week?
- What can you do after making a mistake instead of making excuses?
- How can our family help one another stay consistent?
