True strength means controlling anger

“The strong person is the one who has control of his anger.”

The khateeb, at 17:03

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Warns that uncontrolled anger can destroy marriages, families, and decades-long relationships in seconds.
  2. Reframes material losses and insults as temporary compared with what Allah offers eternally.
  3. Moves from controlling anger to the higher virtues of overlooking, pardoning, and letting go.
  4. Highlights the Prophet's forgiveness at the conquest of Makkah and defines strength as mastery of anger.
  5. Closes with supplications, congregational prayer, and announcements for a sick community member and family night.
Try this week
Pause and calm down before speaking or acting in anger.
Do not fight over temporary possessions, inconveniences, or family disagreements.
Practice suppressing anger, overlooking faults, pardoning others, and letting go.
Pray for the community member undergoing surgery and attend the announced family night.

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminds us that anger is human, but uncontrolled anger can damage relationships in only a few seconds. Worldly things such as cars, food, and possessions are temporary, so they are not worth losing our patience or harming one another. Yusuf showed strength by controlling himself when his brothers accused him. The Prophet also showed strength by forgiving people who had harmed him when he gained power over them. We can practice this strength by pausing, calming down, forgiving, and letting go.

  1. What is one sign that tells you to pause before speaking when you’re angry?
  2. How can we show strength by forgiving someone this week?
  3. What family disagreement could we handle more gently?
