Hajj teaches submission through sacrifice
“You cannot truly submit to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala without sacrificing everything for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
The lessons of Hajj and Ibrahim's family teach that true submission to Allah requires sacrifice, effort, faithful action, and making Allah's pleasure the center of life.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Allah should be the center of a Muslim's entire life.
- Believers are called to offer themselves and their possessions to Allah for Paradise.
- Hajj and the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah embody sacrifice through Ibrahim, Hajar, and Ismail.
- Faith must be demonstrated through effort, deeds, prayer, work, and family responsibility.
- Parents should communicate divine guidance gently while raising children toward obedience.
- True submission requires resisting Shaytan and sacrificing worldly desires for Allah's sake.
In the khateeb's words
“That for Muslims, their lives should be centered on a 24/7 around Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“Faith is what resides in the heart and it's followed by the deeds. It's affirmed and confirmed by the deeds.”
“You want to earn some halal living for your family. You need to work. You want to learn your deen. You need to work.”
“You cannot truly submit to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala without sacrificing everything for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Allahu Akbar should shape our whole lives, helping us put Allah’s pleasure at the center of our choices. He described sacrifice as the central lesson of Hajj and reflected on the examples of Ibrahim, Hajar, and Ismail. Hajar showed trust in Allah while also working hard, teaching us to pair our prayers with effort. He reminded us that a good heart should show itself through good actions, and that parents should communicate gently with their children. He also explained that qurbani is about our awareness of Allah, encouraging us to carry the lessons of Hajj into everyday life.
- What is one thing you could do tomorrow to put Allah’s pleasure first?
- What can Hajar’s example teach us about working toward something we are making dua for?
- How could we speak more gently to each other when something is difficult?
