Wealth should serve the heart, not rule it
“Simplicity is truly the simplicity of the heart, which can only be seen if a person has wealth and then doesn't indulge.”
Muslims should treat worldly wealth as a tool rather than the heart’s priority, practicing prophetic simplicity, charity, and devotion to the Hereafter.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Describes the Prophet’s simple lifestyle and Umar’s emotional reaction.
- Defines Sunnah as the lived implementation of the Qur’an.
- Warns that worldly abundance can lead to competition and spiritual ruin.
- Explains zuhud as restraint despite wealth, not mere poverty.
- Presents Islamic minimalism as removing excess to gain peace and focus.
- Uses the canoe metaphor: dunya is necessary beneath you but destructive in the heart.
- Applies the lesson to consumerism, prayer, decluttering, and community announcements.
In the khateeb's words
“Simplicity is truly the simplicity of the heart, which can only be seen if a person has wealth and then doesn't indulge.”
“We need the dunya. No one's telling you to give up your job. No one's telling you to become a pauper.”
“However if you start putting that dunya in your canoe. In your heart. Chasing after it. Longing after it. Loving it. That's when you start pouring it inside your canoe. And you will drown in this dunya.”
“The people who enjoy their salah the most. Are the people who have the least. They have nothing to worry about.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that the Prophet lived simply and valued the hereafter more than worldly luxury. The khateeb explained that simplicity is about our hearts and choices, and that we can earn money, do our work well, and give generously while avoiding excessive indulgence. He warned that comparing ourselves with others and always wanting the next purchase can distract us from Allah. He compared worldly life to water beneath a canoe: it helps us travel, but letting it inside can sink us. As a family, we can practice gratitude, share what we have, and reduce distractions so we give more attention to prayer and our relationship with Allah.
- What is something you already have that you sometimes forget to appreciate?
- When have you wanted something that turned out to be less exciting after you got it?
- What could we simplify or share this week to help us focus more on Allah?
