Amanah must guide every part of life
“Amanah is not limited to money.”
Amanah, honesty, trustworthiness, and faithful responsibility, is a defining mark of believers that must govern our relationship with Allah, people, ourselves, work, family, and community.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines taqwa and amanah, linking trustworthiness to successful belief and avoiding hypocrisy.
- Applies amanah to the relationship with Allah through environmental stewardship, representing Islam, prayer, Quran, the masjid, and reviving sunnah.
- Applies amanah to work, business, professional ethics, employee duties, and government contracts.
- Applies amanah to the body, children, money, spouse, and other personal responsibilities, emphasizing judgment-day accountability.
- Explains that masculine grammatical forms in Arabic generally include women and urges women to help remind their families.
- Addresses men's responsibilities toward wives, including affection and kindness, and toward lowering the gaze.
In the khateeb's words
“But amanah is not limited to money. It's actually involved in every single aspect of our lives.”
“Say, I might lose a sale, but I'm not going to lose my amanah.”
“Everything you have, Allah gave you is an Amana. Before you misbehave dealing with it, ask, is Allah going to be happy with it or not?”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that amanah means honesty, keeping promises, and caring faithfully for what Allah has entrusted to us. Those trusts include the earth, our faith, our work, our bodies, our money, our families, and our spouses. We represent Islam through everyday conduct, care for the masjid and Quran, and revive good sunnahs. At work, we should be fair, disclose problems, protect others, and honor our agreements. Men are especially urged to care for their wives and guard their eyes, while women are included in the Quran's general address and can help remind their families.
- What responsibility in our family feels like an amanah to you?
- How can we practice honesty at school, work, or in our friendships?
